Here is the product page: magic.wizards.com/en/products/explorers-ixalanAppears to be a regular Magic Card based product with some added things currently.

Yep, it's a four-deck Magic set akin to the recent Nicol Bolas Archenemy set.

So the news we got om 15-30 july was that they are making a new boardgame. Replacing Arena of the planeswalker. The only reasons they dont say anything is that they have shops fully stacked with the game. If they say anything it will affect people buying the remaining stock.

We should wait a little before burying the game, In the 25 years anniversary announcement they wrote "We'll be officially kicking off our 25th anniversary celebration at HASCON in Providence, Rhode Island, September 8–10, 2017. That event will be filled with games, previews of upcoming products, and fun events everyone can enjoy—including an early Prerelease for Iconic Masters that will be the world's first look at that set". Maybe we Will get more news on september. The link is magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/25th-anniversary-announcement-day-2017-06-14

I dont know if thats related to AotP, but good news & hope d:) Magic duels has been dropped from future support and they are concentrating on their mmo project going forward. Unrelated to the board game other than name.

Unrelated to the board game other than name. If anything I would say it's actually the final nail in the coffin. Seems like a terrible idea to try and market Magic the Gathering Arena and Magic the Gathering Arena of the Planeswalkers at the same time. I'll just assume it is the end and keep working on my customs. I'll post them on this forum eventually.

Such a perfect set that just released to have another expansion.. Host standard tournaments at shops.. Start a custom map sight. Multiple sets to hold 10 players.. I have a group that plays regularly every week. Granted I have heroscape tiles for big maps like that, we run multiple gamestyles including things like 3 teams of two vs boss. 3 teams of 3.. Many of ideas possible to go with. Sucks to have something neat start and vanish so quick. May as well spit on some customers. /:

Just stumbled onto this site after looking at Wizards' latest news drop (regarding logos).
Their upcoming online product is called "Arenas", and bears no resemblence or indication of any connection to "Arena of the Planeswalkers"... And honestly, neither Wizards nor Hasbro are known for keeping terribly similar or potentially confusingly named product lines in circulation at the same time. It's just not their way of doing business.
I don't think I've ever seen Wizards actually come out and "say" that a product was dead before. I googled Heroscape, the product that this was effectively built off of, and I couldn't even find confirmation that it's dead. -It's been out of production for more than ten years now. The fact that they haven't said it doesn't really mean anything. The fact that every other Magic product has been receiving at least two updates a year, and we've gone over a year without a hint of one... Well, I don't think it gets more telling than that.
I'd love to be wrong about this -I bought two copies each of all three releases. Between the massive discounts and the quality of the game, I figured it would be nice having even more options for customized/multicolor armies -there's so much more freedom without running into things you can't use because the other player already claimed them. Can also do larger matches. I would have loved to get even just a couple more new sets, it would have really opened up a lot of broader customization options to give this game real long-term legs.
Historically I haven't been a big fan of most "fan made" content for games like this, but I suspect it's probably the only way players will end up seeing any more new content.
I guess that on a positive note, gaming miniatures are available for some remarkably low prices, and there's a wealth of resources from which we could effectively come up with a rough logical formula to "convert" new creatures/armies from existing M:tG sets.
Reaper, for example, has some excellent armies for smaller creatures (kobolds pack, goblins pack, etc.) Thats a decent group if good looking miniatures in the same scale for only a few bucks (Reaper minis are unpainted, but they have a material unlike any other that doesn't require primer, so they're great for beginners whovr never painted... And let's be honest, the paint jobs on these things weren't exactly a high point to begin with, lol.
Combined with comparable stats, some artwork, and amusing flavor text, and that's a good start for a couple new enemy groups right off the bat. If a few people fell together in an ORGANIZED effort, some cool stuff could be done. I'd love to see some of the more well-received past sets from M:tG get converted for the board.

This is huge shame, has anyone seen shadespire? It reminded me greatly of aotp but it's slightly better I really wish they would've taken games workshop approach, but with their bigger releases.
I think this will make me want to finally finish my custom cards the intent was to give people that list building feel while waiting but looks like now it might be the only way to bring new life into the game.

Wizards of the coast and Wizkids (makers of heroclix) are teaming up. Wizkids will make small prepainted figures for Magic. First wave are generic creatures to represent tokens. They are also creating a new game with these small figures. Arena of the PLaneswalkers will officially be dead as the new game will not be compatible with this game. Nothing stops people from creating custom rules however.
I first saw this news on bell of the lost souls website about a week ago. I think Spikey bits covered it too. I am a big AOS fan and saw the news.

This was such an amazing game. I will continue to write to Hasbro the plethora of reasons they should consider a fourth expansion.
