You can stock up on the first set (makes a great gift or prize) at Target, as they are clearancing them out. Currently $13.79 online (free ship to store), or you can go to your local store and see if they have them on hand - first come, first serve. Prices may vary per region, but I got mine for $15.61 + tax, others got for $9. Honestly, although a great deal, I feel bad, as both Toys-R-Us and Target clearancing them out does not bode well for the longevity of the game, and has the same issue as heroscape in that it might not be moving as good as Hasbro (note not WotC - Hasbro) had hoped. My guess is that Candy Land and the branded Monopoly of the month are outselling it even though Magic:AotP might be outselling Ticket to Ride or Codenames in the same isle of the stores - those come from smaller distributors so could accept smaller numbers, but Hasbro doesn't. Anyway, buy for all your friends, or take to game nights and offer to sell unopened sets at cost to those who play with your opened set. Keep the game alive as long as you can.

Or.... Maybe they have been slowly clearing them out to make room for the next standalone and reduce the multiple skus that plagued Heroscape?

I saw this post and checked my local Target - and it is marked down to $9.20 a set on clearance. The nearby Wal-mart still has a price of $29.95 on the shelf. My guess / HOPE is as Colorcrayons mentioned, that is is marked down to make shelf space for the Innistrad set.

Another reason could be as a loss lead. The production run might have been made in such significant numbers that the manufacturing cost was quite small per unit.
Add to the psychological effect of value when a products price is slashed "gotta buy it, its too good of a deal not to" and you have widespread advertising for no cost, and the profit per unit might still be quite high.
Enough people buy into the loss lead, and salivate for more, they are inclined to buy expansions.
