So, I had a few questions about Jace's ability to unsummon.
1. When a squad is unsummoned, do they "heal" i.e. I unsummon Chandra's Firecats who each had 1 damage on them from earlier, do they come back fully healed, or do they keep the damage on them?
2. If Jace unsummons a squad who no longer has a planeswalker, does that mean that squad can never come back?
3. Do I have to unsummon after attack rolls are made, or can I do it immediately when my opponent says he is going to attack (i.e. my opponent says his hookmaster is attacking Jace, can I unsummon immediately, or do I wait till attack rolls are made or do I wait until after damage is dealt?)

1. Yes they heal.
2. Only planeswalkers can summon, so yes, they are gone.
3. I would say the attack happens. Dice are rolled and even if the fig dies the card still works.

Thank you! That makes Jace balance much better. Originally, I was unsummoning the moment someone said they were attacking, so before damage. This seems to make him less, well, evil and more in balance with the other characters. Although, now I have to rethink some strategies Thanks again!

Just to be clear, are you talking about the card Unsummon? Because as a sorcery, you can play it either before the active figure(s) move and attack, or after they move and attack. If you are talking about the Hidden Enchantment cards Aetherspouts or Call to Heel, the creature squad being returned to the reserve does not get to resolve its attack. My basis for this is page 11 of the rules: Following the steps, the squad creature becomes an attacker as soon as it is Announced, and the Hidden card would trigger then, not after rolling dice.

Hasbro confirmed when I inquired:
Hi James,
Thank you for contacting Hasbro regarding your gameplay questions for the Magic The Gathering: Arena of the Planeswalkers game. I'm pleased to reply.
Per our Planeswalkers experts, the creature cards get returned to the reserve as soon as an attack is declared – before any dice are rolled. Any creature enchantments that were on the squad are sent to your spell card graveyard.
Again, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to reach out to us.
I hope you have a fun day!
Kind regards, Oneida

Thank you for checking on that! Although wow, it also removes the enchantments? I'm starting to wonder if really is overpowered a bit. Well, I'll keep playing and see, maybe I just get really lucky with dice and cards all the time or something Thanks again!

Could someone clarify Unsummon for me...when it says "return that squad to its owner's reserve" does that mean all creatures in the squad that are in play, or just the target creature?
Thanks.

Every creature in the squad, excluding any figures from that squad that have already died/been removed somehow.

One thing that will work against unsummoning is that, since the whole squad returns to the reserve, the figures from that squad that are in the graveyard, also return to the reserve.

The effect of cards that "return a squad to owner's reserve" or as it's being referred to in this thread, unsummoned, only applies to active squad creatures in play. Not creatures from the player's graveyard. The balance in this effect is that the figures are healed when they're returned to the player's reserve. Bringing figures back into play from the graveyard is a spell only available in the deck at the moment. has an abundance of this type of spell but i've found that as you get more comfortable with the game-play and games start to move faster, returning a squad to it's owner's reserve can often work against the player casting that spell.
