There have been three Arena releases - The original Arena set, the Zendikar expansion and the Innistrad set. Arena and Innistrad can be played as is, Zendikar requires one of the sets. If you can locate all three of the releases, you can make many spell book choices and many army build choices. The Arena terrain pieces match up with Heroscape Terrain. No additional terrain is required to play the game, but it does offer additional versatility in map making. There has been much discussion on using Heroscape Armies in Arena. Some import straight in to Arena, while some require modifications. I think I would give the base game a play or two before deciding to gather lots of Heroscape stuff to expand it. This thread goes in to some details on Heroscape Terrain. planeswalker-arena.boards.net/thread/475/which-heroscape-expansions-best-terrainI hope this helped.

My advice to you would be to purchase all 3 as you can't get any customization of your army without all 3. Start of with the normal Arena of the Planeswalkers base set and see if you like it. A whole lot more board customization is availible with the purchase of some heroscape terrain off of eBay. This game is MTG-themed and has some elements of MTG in it and is also similar to games such as Risk or Stratego.

Bare Minimum? The base game (I know it's obvious, but still, that's all you NEED) I would however recommend all 3 sets as well. The Zendikar expansion adds a "Boss battle" mode as well as the first multicolor planeswalker ( , ) While the Innistrad Expansion adds several more multicolor, unique terrain, etc. Getting tiles from the old heroscape game is a great way to change up the maps a bit and make it bigger as well, although the heroscape army cards don't really scale well to the planeswalker ones.

We regularly mix heroscape and Arena and it seems to work out fine for the most part. The angel is a beast though.
