As stated on Pg. 10 of the game guide. "Engaged figures. If one of your figures is engaged with one or more other figures, your figure may only attack those figures. A figure does not need line of sight to attack a figure that it is engaged with or adjacent to."
I would never do it but, according to how it's worded it sounds like that you could attack through the ruin because you no longer require line of sight. I also think that this couldn't have been a question in Heroscape because it didn't include cardboard walls that can separate adjacent hexes. |

But that does not clarify the issue.
For attacking it is not necessary that a figure is engaged to target figure.
According to the rules it is sufficient to be adjacent to some figure to abandon on line-of-sight visibility.
Thus if two figures are adjacent to each other with ruin wall between them they can attack each other as line-of-sight is not necessary (according to rules).
Of course i believe that intention is not to allow such ridiculous attack. But rules do not prevent in my opinion.

For Range attacking, the figures do not need to be adjacent. However, if a range figure has any enemies adjacent and engaged, one of them must be targeted before a more distant figure. For Melee combat, the figures must be adjacent and engaged. You are correct that Line of Sight is ignored when figures in Melee combat are adjacent and engaged. However, the rule on page 9 explains that an obstacle like ruin can cause a situation where the figures are not engaged. Pg 9 Becoming engaged. A figure becomes engaged when it moves adjacent to an opponent’s figure. An exception is when one figure’s base is on a level equal to or higher than the height of the other figure. In this case, they are not adjacent and therefore are not engaged (see Example 11). If an obstacle such as a ruin is between two figures, both figures’ heights must be higher than the obstacle to be engaged. If both figures’ heights are lower than the obstacle, or only one figure’s height is lower, they are not engaged Pg 10 Any figures on your chosen army card within range and with a clear line of sight (if necessary) can attack. If no figure on your army card meets these two conditions, then no attack is possible. Engaged figures. If one of your figures is engaged with one or more other figures, your figure may attack only those figures. A figure does not need line of sight to attack a figure that it is engaged with or adjacent to. Attacking around other figures. You may attack figures even if other figures are between your figure and the targeted figure, but you must have a clear line of sight to attack. The rules certainly could have been improved upon. |
