Warning: Once you master these tactics, you may be unable to go back to losing.
Some of what I am about to say may seem like common knowledge but many integral parts of this winning strategy are often forgot. Be able to recognize these strategies when used against you. Take everything with a grain of salt because sometimes you just get unlucky or your opponent is better than you are. These steps are in no particular order; you may also follow what you will. Whatever, works for you.
.) Know the rules, whatever figures you use know the base game mechanics so you can get the most out of your units. Remembering the order of turns, and how actions are taken gives you so much benefit since you may form plans ahead of your turn.
.) Analyze what you did, what your opponent has done, and were things were located. Pay very close attention to how your squads were applied to the table and how they performed during the battle. Use this knowledge to improve your tactics post game. Whatever you find is not working don’t do it anymore.
.) Divide and Conquer! Moving a threatening figure or group of figures into the open can lure an opponent’s figure(s) over to this area. This opens up space to move in with other figures and attack the defending figs’ you want too. Try to utilize this tactic to severely weaken or wipe entire army cards off the battlefield in one fell swoop. A fantastic way to take out Planeswalkers or “problem” minis’ pretty much ending the game at this point.
.) Never, end a game early. Not because you need to win but because you and another player agreed to play and enjoy a game together. Moreover, you don’t want to spoil someone else’s fun buy quitting before their win/loss. You learn so much from your mistakes it’s truly ludicrous. I could preach strategy all day but you learn more from failing and picking back up. Most of the “awesome” stories happen during this point when you sneak up on an opponent, almost snagging a win do to lucky dice roles.
.) Do not wait for an opportunity. Don’t wait for your opponent to make a mistake. Create opportunities with strategy.
.) Read your opponent, actions speak louder than words. Pay attention to their actions, this will help you learn army/player strategies and what you need to do to counter them after you have adequate experience playing against them.
.) Move your opponent’s figures for them; force them to go where you want. Use engagements, walls, and terrain to your advantage. Make it so they have to choose between a water space, being engaged, or something similar.
.) Engage if you don’t want an opponent’s figure to attack a certain figure you control. Engage that figure with a different figure you control blocking them off or they take 1 . Don’t let yourself get engaged when you don’t want to be, stay just far enough out of range of a particular figure.
.) Never, stop on a water space they are the worst. (Even with Sea Born or Flying) Unless you have Flying or Sea Born try not to move through water unless necessary.
.) Cover is the most overpowered thing in this game. If you can’t be seen you can’t be hit. USE IT ALL THE TIME! You can make yourself visible to the figures you want to hit that’s ok. Just don’t leave your unit open to as many attacks as possible. Real soldiers only have one life and do not run into the open to get shot at. So, why should your plastic miniatures?
.) Expect the unexpected. Don’t place all your eggs in one basket. Whatever, you just did be ready for it to go south. You can always get unlucky or countered so attempt to prepare a backup strategy.
.) Capture those glyphs and take that hill. Any advantage you have on your opponent is still an advantage. Never underestimate the usefulness of extra damage this also applies to leaving engagement attacks and spells.
.) I would say learn the army cards/spells but it isn’t that necessary. I would prioritize regular attacking over abilities. Just make sure you are ready to adapt on the fly for any situation.
.) Protect your Walker but don’t hesitate to move them in for some kills.
.) Suicide squads are extremely useful and during my time, trying to create a harder game for myself this was an ineffective attempt at losing. Why the suicide squad tactic is so powerful is because the squad is used aggressively getting engaged with the opposition and attacking until destroyed.
.) Study, tactics like the aforementioned divide and conquer have been used for centuries. So, pop open that browser and hit up some history sites. Whether it’s a squad or army they are still applicable only on a smaller scale.
.) Play the game. You won’t know what works until you try it, before you use it it’s just theory.
.) Damage VS Defense. Know what your base statistics are good for don’t send in an Elf Ranger to soak up damage.
.) Note your units size/facing. While it’s natural to leave a unit positioned towards the enemy, if you were to turn them to another angle they may not be able to target you.
.) Get invested, read lore, make your own stories. Just enjoy the narrative aspect. Remember you want to have fun so make it memorable. Sometimes you should throw strategy out the window and have those figures go for glory, revenge, whatever little goals you can set for yourself you’ll start having way more fun.
Update:
.) If given the opportunity kill a figure as opposed to damaging multiple figures. You will take less damage in the long run.
