I've created a few custom units to help add variety to my game, and wanted to ask the community their opinions for properly balancing them. This first one is the reaper bones shark man. I haven't come up with a proper name for him yet, and I have no idea how to properly cost him. So any feedback would be appreciated. The image is a picture of the actual miniature that my wife and I painted.

Hi Demonstrasys! There are two ways of doing this: 1) Theory Crafting and 2) Playtesting (the better method) In short, step one theorycrafting is judging a baseline of how much the figure should cost and comparing it to existing "official" figures in order to determine how much you would pay to draft him. In this case, compare Shark Man to the Eldrazi Ruiner. Would you pay more, less? Step two of this process is actually playing with the figure, and adjusting the points accordingly. Lets say you played Shark Man at your listed 60 points, and he owned. You increase the point value accordingly so that the results of the battle are not so onesided. Realistically, the purpose of balancing with points is to create some system of equal probability for each player to win. Thus, maybe Shark Man at 60 pts gave you an unfair advantage Optional Step over Theorycrafting: I spent two weeks calculating the stats of all the base game units and planeswalkers to assign a point value to each of the stats they receive. I used this data to create a spreadsheet which, in my humble opinion, gives a great starting thorycrafted point value. Page one of the spreadsheet is if you wanted to convert an MTG card to Arena, and Page two is for if you wanted to create a Creature from scratch. You are more than welcome to use this as well, but I plugged in Shark Man's base stats point value, which came to 70, I would personally add 5-10 extra points for his other two abilities, making him a theorycrafted cost of 75-80. Ether way, this spreadsheet is how I balanced the 24 figure cards I have made and will post on this site within the next month. I hope it helps!!! Good luck friend!

Thanks, something like that would be very helpful for me right now, to get a base value if nothing else. I'm not sure exactly how to use the spreadsheet however, where would you input sharkmans data exactly?

On the tab ( Arena Card Creation), you can change the following stats: - Attack - Defense - Life - Movement - Range - Point Value of Abilities - Point Value of Drawbacks - Units in Squad - Card Type (Creature or Planeswalker) I've been using this sheet like a mad man for the past month so I can see how it would be unclear for someone else to use. Sorry! Does that help? I reattached the spreadsheet with Sharkman's stats so you can see what I am talking about. Let me know what you think! I see, everything seems to work except in the spaces pts per unit and pts per squad its outputting Err:514. I would assume because I am using open office and you probably made this spreadsheet in a different program. The only other errors are the life cell and squad/unit pts on the third page. What program did you code the spreadsheet in? I added a couple more creatures, another hero, and a squad. I realize the images are a bit off this time around, I got sick of trying to match everything up on them and just made a mse template for this. Will make this all easier for me going forward, still some kinks to work out though. The knight is in-between medium 4 and 5, so should he just default to 5? He is closer to 4 but definitely a bit taller.

Hey demonstrasys! Unfortunately, this spreadsheet was coded in Microsoft Excel, because, well, Excel is my Jam... I'm not too sure that the spreadsheet will translate to other programs... I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you!

That's fine, I can just keep estimating it, and tweaking it over time, thanks anyways! So, now I'm trying to make a few themed squads, first set are devils for . As you can see I haven't painted the first two yet, but I am getting around to it. These are all reaper minis as well, the second one being the reaper "Scourge Devil" same name, he is actually my first metal mini, waiting to get some good files before working on him and painting him. I worry about him being too cheap, so I gave him a negative, sort of in the same vein as some cards who were forced to attack each turn. I'm also working on a wall for every color, will post some thoughts on that when I'm further into it.
