For those of you who aren't avid Magic: the Gathering fans, or are simply unaware, here is some info according to MTGsalvation wiki:
What and who are Planeswalkers?
...and here is a list of current, postmending*, Planeswalkers that could be pulled from to make models and rules for this game. With links to each for further background info:
*Postmending being the most likely candidates, since the revision of the background would be the probable course for current marketing of WotC's M:tG brand. This is why premending planeswalkers such as Urza, Yawgmoth, etc. are conspicuously missing from this list.
What is Mana?
Unlike in M:tG, there is not (yet?) any resource management in the form of mana. It is used to simply represent the spheres of influence with the Arena of the Planeswalkers game.

What and who are Planeswalkers?
Planeswalkers are among the most powerful beings in the multiverse, and are the thematic identities of the players of the game. Planeswalkers can be born at random in any sapient species, with no outward signs of their latent . However, there is an incredibly remote chance that any given sentient, natural being will be born with a planeswalker's spark. When that being is put through a period of extreme stress—in many cases death—the spark can trigger, causing the individual to ascend and become a planeswalker.

What is Mana?
Mana is the magical energy that fuels the spells of spellcasters. It is deeply interconnected with the lifeforce on every plane in the Multiverse, and it can take that role by itself as well. When there is little or no mana in an area, things die or become emaciated and weak.
In Magic, leylines are ancient mana paths that flow and crisscross each other across a given landscape. They are often found rather than cast. For example, leylines formed the Implicit Maze on Ravnica and connected the hedrons of Zendikar.
Mana is primarily divided into five colors, but can also be "". On cards, mana is represented by mana symbols.
mana, in the context of this game, means that creatures and spells that are may be summoned or cast by any Planeswalker, regardless of their color affiliation.
